My passion for the outdoors ie trees, plants, rocks, seeds, flowers and fungi I attribute to having been raised in the beautiful land that is South Africa. Who would not be seduced by the beauty there! I spent my childhood learning about indigenous plants, birds, insects and animals and living here in Portugal for the last 23 years has bought that passion to life again.

There is so much to inspire me here. I am very blessed to have the beautiful Ria Formosa on my doorstep and have been exploring the forests here for 13 years - documenting the plants and taking 1000's of reference photographs for future paintings should my subject not be available 'in the flesh'.

Like many other painters I am self-taught. I have researched techniques from some of the great Botanical artists that I have observed and admired over the last 5 years and adapted them to forge my own individual style.

You may notice in my works that I am not attempting to replicate exactly how the subject appears but rather convey an interpretation of my observations from the moment my eyes leave the subject to the moment they arrive to the page to begin drawing and painting. Here and there you may find a unique pattern or detail that adds intrigue and offers a window into a Universe within a Universe.
